On 2 October 2025, Dr. Gitanjali J. Angmo, wife of Sonam Wangchuk, filed a Writ of Habeas Corpus before the Supreme Court challenging his detention under the NSA. The plea, drafted and filed through Advocate Sarvam Ritam Khare, seeks Wangchuk’s immediate release and raises serious concerns about the legality and necessity of his preventive detention.
Her plea highlights Wangchuk’s constitutional activism and questions the government’s action against a peaceful protestor with a record of public service. The petition further points to Wangchuk’s deteriorating health, lack of access to daily essentials and medicines, and procedural irregularities including denial of communication rights and lack of FIR at the time of initial detention.
Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on 26 September 2025, following protests and incidents of violence in Ladakh related to statehood demands for the Union Territory. After his arrest, Wangchuk was transferred and remains in custody at a jail in Jodhpur.
Dr. Angmo had also written an impassioned letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Amit Shah, among others, on 1 October 2025. The letter calls for the restoration of basic rights and an end to what she termed a “witch hunt” against peaceful democratic activism for Ladakh’s rights.
The Ladakh Apex Body has withdrawn from talks with the Centre, condemning the government’s labelling of Wangchuk as “anti-national”.
