Centre notifies Stricter Safety Norms for Hydrogen Pressure Vessels under Amended 2025 Rules

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has notified the Static and Mobile Pressure Vessels (Unfired) (Amendment) Rules, 2025, introducing stricter safety and technical standards for pressure vessels used in the storage and transport of hydrogen, including cryogenic hydrogen.

The amendments insert key international benchmarks such as ASME BPV Section VIII Division 3 and several ISO standards (17081, 10587, 16573, 15330) to ensure hydrogen compatibility, embrittlement resistance, and safety in storage and transport systems. Cryogenic hydrogen vessels must now comply with ISO 21011, and transport vessels must meet ISO 228-1 or ISO 7-1 standards, or any equivalent standard approved by the Chief Controller.

Additionally, Rule 19 has been modified to require fitness-for-service assessments for hydrogen pressure vessels in accordance with API 579, supplementing the technical robustness of the 2016 framework.
