The Supreme Court declined to grant bail to an accused in connection with the 2024 mob lynching case in Gujarat, thereby upholding the Gujarat High Court’s order refusing bail.
The petitioner had approached the apex court challenging the Gujarat High Court’s decision dated 25 November 2024 in CRLMA No. 22901/2024, which denied his plea for regular bail. The case pertains to a mob lynching incident that had triggered significant public outrage and involved serious charges against multiple accused.
A Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta heard the matter. After condoning the delay in filing the petition, the Court was not inclined to interfere with the High Court’s reasoning and findings. It dismissed the Special Leave Petition at the threshold, thereby affirming the lower court’s order.
The dismissal indicates the Court’s satisfaction with the High Court’s evaluation of the gravity of the offence and the materials on record. All pending applications in the matter were also disposed of. The accused will continue to remain in custody as the investigation and trial proceed.
