Bar Council of Delhi cautions Lawyers against advertising Legal Services on Social Media

The Bar Council of Delhi has issued a stern notice warning advocates against using social media platforms to advertise or solicit legal work, either directly or indirectly. The Council observed a rising trend of lawyers and self-styled ‘legal influencers’ posting videos, personal interactions, and promotional content online actions deemed unethical and violative of Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules.

The notice highlights that such conduct not only undermines the dignity of the legal profession but also risks spreading misinformation, especially when done by individuals lacking proper legal credentials. The Council has directed all advocates engaging in such practices to remove their content immediately, failing which they may face disciplinary proceedings under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961, which can result in suspension or cancellation of their license to practice.
