On the occasion of his final working day before retirement, Supreme Court Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia reflected warmly on his judicial journey, expressing heartfelt sentiments about his time on the Bench. Speaking during the ceremonial proceedings held in his honour, Justice Dhulia said that what he would miss most after leaving office was “Hindustan”, a term he used to represent the diverse community of lawyers and litigants who came before him from across the country.
Expressing deep appreciation for the wide representation from across India in the Supreme Court, Justice Dhulia noted that he would miss the vibrant and inclusive nature of the institution.
Born on August 10, 1960, Justice Dhulia completed his Master’s degree in Modern History in 1983 and obtained his law degree in 1986. He began practising civil and constitutional law at the Allahabad High Court before moving to the Uttarakhand High Court. He was elevated as a judge of the Uttarakhand High Court in 2008, subsequently appointed Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in 2021, and later joined the Supreme Court on May 9, 2022.
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, through Justice BR Gavai who presided over the farewell, commended Justice Dhulia for his clarity of thought, legal acumen, and deep commitment to justice. Justice Dhulia was described as a jurist with a patient and thoughtful approach, who consistently demonstrated wisdom and conviction in his decision-making. His background from Garhwal and his family’s legacy of public service were also highlighted as influential factors in his legal career.
Justice Dhulia’s interest in literature, history, and Urdu poetry was acknowledged by his peers, along with his passion for reading and golfing. He was recognised not only for his judicial contributions but also for the personal warmth and openness he extended to members of the Bar.
Attorney General R. Venkataramani observed that Justice Dhulia always ensured that litigants were heard fairly and attentively, with a strong focus on the human aspect of each case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta praised his impartial and unprejudiced outlook, noting his ability to create a courtroom environment where advocates felt at ease.
SCAORA President Vipin Nair and ASG Aishwarya Bhati both expressed admiration for Justice Dhulia’s grounded presence on the Bench, his awareness of contemporary legal issues, and his dignified conduct.
Justice Dhulia formally retires on August 10, 2025.
