SCBA Resolution Seeks More Women Representation in Supreme Court and High Courts

Women Judicial Representation

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has expressed grave concern over the disproportionately low representation of women judges in the Supreme Court and High Courts across India. The resolution highlights that several High Courts currently have no women judges and, out of around 1100 sanctioned High Court judge posts, only 103 are occupied by women.

The SCBA expressed disappointment that no woman from the Bar or Bench has been elevated to the Supreme Court since 2021, leaving only one woman judge on its bench. The President, Dr. Vikas Singh, had earlier urged the Chief Justice of India to ensure at least proportionate representation of women in higher judiciary appointments.

The Association strongly believes that gender balance on the Bench is essential for fair representation, strengthening public confidence, enriching judicial perspectives, and reflecting societal diversity.

The SCBA has formally resolved to request the Chief Justice of India and the Collegium to give urgent consideration to appointing more women judges in upcoming judicial appointments to both the Supreme Court and the High Courts.
