The Supreme Court bench of Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran has issued notice on a PIL seeking directions to the Centre and States to introduce transgender-inclusive Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in school curricula across India. The plea argues that inclusive CSE is essential to promote awareness, equality, and protection of rights for transgender students nationwide.
The petition highlights that despite the 2014 NALSA judgment and the enactment of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, school curricula remain largely silent on gender diversity and sexual orientation. It contends that incorporating scientifically accurate and inclusive CSE would not only safeguard the dignity of transgender children but also help counter bullying, stigma, and misinformation in schools.
