On 16-09-2025, the Supreme Court dismissed a writ petition filed under Article 32 of the Constitution to urge the Court’s intervention for allowing the reconstruction and replacement of a 7-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari Temple in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh.
The bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran heard the pleadings of the petitioner, who sought directions for the replacement and consecration of the Vishnu idol at the Javari temple which is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Khajuraho temple complex, stating that the idol was dilapidated and argued that several representations were made before the Archeological Survey of India (ASI).
The Court firmly refused his plea, stating that the petition was purely a ‘publicity interest litigation’ and also asked the petitioner to “Go and ask the deity himself to do something”.
Further, the Court stated that the issue squarely fell under the jurisdiction of the ASI and accordingly, dismissed the petition.
