The Supreme Court has issued notice on the bail plea of journalist Mahesh Langa in a money laundering case arising from two FIRs that included allegations of cheating. The matter was heard by a Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi.
The accused approached the Supreme Court after the Gujarat High Court declined to grant him regular bail. During the hearing, Justice Surya Kant questioned the nature of accused’s professional background, noting that while there are genuine journalists, there are also individuals who claim to be journalists without adhering to professional standards.
Appearing for the accused, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal submitted that the allegations against his client were unproven and pointed out that Langa had documents of the court to support his case. He also remarked that there was a background to the matters raised against him.
The Court directed issuance of notice on the bail plea.
