CJI inaugurates SCBA Lecture Series on ‘Justice for All – Legal Aid and Mediation: The Collaborative Role of Bar and the Bench’

Bar-Bench Collaboration

The Chief Justice of India today delivered the inaugural address at the Supreme Court Bar Association’s (SCBA) new lecture series, themed “Justice for All – Legal Aid and Mediation.”

Commending the SCBA, particularly its younger members, for the initiative, the Chief Justice described learning as a continuous process, stating that such forums benefit not only students and lawyers but also judges. He emphasized that the SCBA has consistently played an active role in advocating for professional development, ethical standards, procedural reforms, and the welfare of the Bar.

Highlighting the central theme, the Chief Justice said that the promise of justice for all enshrined in the Constitution remains out of reach for many citizens due to economic, geographical, and procedural barriers. He stressed that both the Bar and the Bench are equal partners in ensuring access to justice, likening them to the “two wheels of the chariot of justice” that must move in harmony.

Underscoring the importance of legal aid schemes, he noted that too many citizens remain unaware of their rights or unable to navigate the complexities of the legal system. He urged lawyers to devote time to pro bono work, calling it not a charitable act but a professional responsibility.

The Chief Justice also drew attention to the role of mediation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in addressing India’s rising caseload. He observed that mediation can provide timely, cost-effective, and relationship-preserving solutions, and encouraged senior advocates to guide parties towards settlement where possible.

He remarked that legal aid and mediation together help bridge the gap between constitutional ideals and social realities, ensuring that justice is not an abstract promise but a lived reality.

Calling the lecture series a valuable moment of reflection amidst the pressures of daily legal practice, the Chief Justice said it would foster dialogue, collaboration, and shared responsibility between the Bar and the Bench. He expressed happiness that the series would be held monthly, providing opportunities for judges, senior lawyers, and young advocates to exchange knowledge

He concluded with acknowledging the contributions of the SCBA office bearers and urging the legal community to reaffirm its collective responsibility to make justice accessible, inclusive, and equitable for all citizens.
