Show-cause Notice Issued by Bar Council of Kerala Against Advocate for Promoting Legal Services on Social Media

Legal ethics violation

On 17-09-2025, the Bar Council of Kerala issued a show-cause notice under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961(Act), to Advocate Happymon Babu for allegedly engaging in acts that solicit professional work through social media platforms.

The notice mentioned that the Bar received information regarding the publishing of materials by Advocate Babu on 12-09-2025 for promoting his legal services in violation of Standards of Professional Conduct and Etiquette prescribed under Part VI, Chapter II, and Section IV of the Bar Council of India Rules, framed under the Act.

The notice further stated that through recent directives, the Bar Council of India has reaffirmed that online promotion or socialisation by advocates constitutes a violation of professional ethics and decorum, and that the prohibition extends to all forms of media, including digital and social platforms.

Advocate Happymon Babu has been directed to submit a written explanation within 15 days showing cause as to why disciplinary actions should not be initiated against him.
