Bar Council of India Grants Interim Approval for Two Supernumerary Seats for Transgender Students in Kerala Law Colleges

Transgender Law Seats

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has granted interim approval to the Kerala Government’s proposal for creating two supernumerary seats in all law colleges across the state for candidates belonging to the transgender category. The approval, issued in compliance with Kerala High Court directions, applies to both the 3-year LL.B. and 5-year integrated LL.B. programmes for the academic year 2025–26.

These additional seats are over and above the existing sanctioned strength and will not affect the seat matrix of other categories. The BCI directed colleges to maintain a distinct transgender category, ensure a safe and non-discriminatory environment, and submit compliance reports after each admission round.

This one-time approval will remain effective for 2025–26 pending consideration of a permanent scheme.
