Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has written to the Union Law Ministry recommending Justice Surya Kant to succeed him as the next Chief Justice of India upon his retirement on November 23, 2025.
Justice Surya Kant, who was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019, is set to have a tenure as CJI extending until February 9, 2027, a term of over 14 months.
Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, into a middle-class family, Justice Kant pursued his early education at Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, graduating in 1981. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Law (LL.B.) in 1984 from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak.
Justice Kant began his legal career in 1984 at the District Court, Hisar, and shifted his practice to the Punjab and Haryana High Court the following year. Recognised for his professional excellence, he was designated as a Senior Advocate in March 2001 and went on to serve as the Advocate General of Haryana until his elevation as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004.
He was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018, before being elevated to the Supreme Court of India in May 2019.
