Supreme Court Takes Suo Motu Cognisance of Custodial Deaths; Seeks Report on Non-Functional CCTVs in Police Stations

Custodial Deaths

The Supreme Court registered a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) following a media report highlighting the absence of functional CCTV cameras in police stations. A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta expressed concern over custodial violence, noting that around 11 deaths in police custody have occurred in the past seven to eight months.

The Court has sought a status report from the authorities concerned on the functioning of CCTVs in police stations and compliance with earlier directives mandating installation and maintenance of surveillance systems to ensure accountability and protection of fundamental rights.
