The Delhi High Court, in a late-evening hearing before a larger bench comprising the Chief Justice, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to provide security to an advocate who was allegedly assaulted within the Tis Hazari Court complex.
The matter was taken up by a larger bench at around 4:30 pm after the issue was escalated and placed before the Chief Justice. During the hearing, the Learned ASG, Shri Chetan Sharma submissions were made by him referring to Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961, which deals with disciplinary proceedings against advocates. The Court was informed that the allegations between members of the Bar were serious in nature. The bench indicated that all available legal mechanisms, including disciplinary processes, should be invoked where required.
In the course of proceedings, the Bar Council of Delhi was also impleaded as a party respondent. The Court’s order recorded the direction to the police authorities to ensure security for the advocate concerned, with liberty to review or modify the security arrangement depending on subsequent developments and inputs from the special staff.
