The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice on a petition filed by Congress Member of Parliament Karti P. Chidambaram challenging a trial court order framing charges against him in the alleged Chinese visa scam being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Justice Manoj Jain noted that the petition assails the trial court’s order dated December 23, 2025, by which Chidambaram was directed to face trial. The principal ground raised in the plea is the alleged absence of essential ingredients required to constitute offences under Sections 8 and 9 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, as well as Section 204 of the Indian Penal Code, which relates to destruction of evidence. It was contended that the material on record does not disclose any demand or acceptance of illegal gratification.
Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Chidambaram, informed the Court that the case is listed before the trial court on February 4 for admission and denial of documents. He submitted that the charge under Section 204 IPC has been framed without any supporting material.
The CBI, represented by the Special Public Prosecutor, appeared on advance notice and sought time to file a brief reply and status report. The High Court granted the request and directed the agency to place its response on record before the next date of hearing.
The Court also issued notice on Chidambaram’s application seeking stay of further proceedings.
