Delhi High Court Directs Meta, X and E-Commerce Platforms to Take Down Fake Quotes and Unauthorised Merchandise Using Sunil Gavaskar’s Name

Sunil Gavaskar Takedown Order

The Delhi High Court directed Meta, X Corp and various e-commerce platforms to ensure the takedown of social media posts falsely attributing quotes to former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar, as well as online listings selling merchandise in his name without authorisation.

Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora passed an interim injunction in a suit filed by Gavaskar seeking protection of his personality rights. The Court ordered that users on Meta’s platforms must remove the infringing URLs within 72 hours, failing which Meta would be required to take down the content. A similar direction was issued to X Corp.

The Court also directed e-commerce sellers to remove listings that misuse Gavaskar’s name and identity for the sale of products.
