Delhi Lawyers’ Strike Intensifies Over LG’s Notification

The Coordination Committee of All District Courts Bar Associations of Delhi has intensified its agitation against the notification dated 13 August 2025 issued by the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi, calling it “arbitrary” and “against public interest.”

On 23 August 2025, the Committee resolved that advocates across all district courts would abstain from work on 25 August. The protest also barred public prosecutors, ED/CBI lawyers, and police officials from appearing in courts. Demonstrations were held across court complexes, with the Committee warning of a possible gherao of LG House if the order was not withdrawn.

Following a meeting with the Chief Minister on 25 August, which yielded no breakthrough, the Committee extended its strike to 26 August. In a circular, it thanked members for their “overwhelming participation” and declared the protest a “resounding success,” urging continued solidarity.

On 26 August, after discussions with authorities, the Committee announced it had been assured of a “positive decision” by 8 p.m. the same day. However, it cautioned that in case no concrete response is received, the abstinence from work would continue on 27 August in a more intensified mode.

The Delhi High Court Bar Association and the Supreme Court Bar Association have also expressed solidarity with the movement. The Coordination Committee reiterated that the unified protest is being carried out in the “larger interest of the legal fraternity and the public at large.”
