The Delhi High Court heard a PIL seeking implementation of the Delhi Panchayat Raj Act, 1954. The matter came up before a Bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela.
The Court directed the parties to place on record a note detailing the legislative history of Delhi, specifically addressing whether the 1954 Act continues to apply to the territories of Delhi or has been repealed by subsequent legislation.
Standing Counsel Sameer Vashisht, appearing for the Delhi Government, was asked to clarify whether the Act still survives and remains applicable to certain rural areas of the capital.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on December 10.
