On August 25, the Supreme Court stayed proceedings in multiple FIRs lodged by the Maharashtra police against Professor Sanjay Kumar, psephologist and Co-Director of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). The FIRs arose from a tweet carrying an incorrect analysis of the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice NV Anjaria passed the interim order while issuing notice on Kumar’s writ petition seeking quashing of the FIRs.
