The Union government has revoked the detention of environmentalist and Ladakh-based activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA), stating that the decision was taken to foster peace, stability and constructive dialogue in the region.
Wangchuk had been detained on 26 September 2025 under the NSA following a law and order situation that arose in Leh on 24 September 2025. The detention order had been issued by the District Magistrate, Leh, with the objective of maintaining public order.
The government said that Wangchuk had already undergone nearly half of the detention period permitted under the law. In light of ongoing engagement with stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh, the Ministry of Home Affairs decided to revoke the detention with immediate effect.
The statement noted that the Centre has been actively interacting with various groups in the region to address the aspirations and concerns of the people of Ladakh. However, it observed that the atmosphere of bandhs and protests had adversely affected students, job aspirants, businesses, tourism operators and the overall economy of the region.
Reaffirming its approach, the government stated that it remains committed to “fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders.” It added that issues concerning the region would continue to be addressed through engagement, including through the High-Powered Committee mechanism and other appropriate platforms.
