Justice Tejas Karia delivered the keynote address at the “Next Gen Legal Summit on Oral Advocacy and Cross-Examination,” organised by the Young IBA Lawyers’ Committee. The summit brought together emerging legal professionals and experienced practitioners to explore evolving challenges and opportunities in modern legal practice.
In his keynote, Justice Karia noted that oral advocacy and cross-examination are the foundational pillars of the legal profession, shaping not only the justice delivery system but also the credibility and identity of advocates. He highlighted that effective advocacy is not merely about eloquent speaking, but is grounded in clarity of thought, rigorous preparation, reasoned analysis, deep listening skills, and unwavering commitment to justice.
Speaking on cross-examination, Justice Karia emphasised the importance of strategy, patience, and restraint. He noted that successful cross-examination lies in its subtlety shaping judicial perception through quiet yet powerful contradictions rather than dramatic courtroom exchanges. Ethical responsibility, respect for witnesses, and emotional discipline were identified as essential virtues for every young advocate.
Addressing the rapid transformation of the legal landscape, Justice Karia acknowledged that technology is reshaping the profession from digital evidence and AI-assisted research to virtual hearings and multinational commercial disputes. He urged young lawyers to embrace technological fluency while maintaining caution, accountability, and an independent analytical mindset.
Justice Karia also highlighted the need for mentorship, professional integrity, emotional maturity, and strong courtroom temperament in building a long-term legal career. He urged young legal professionals not to chase quick success but to develop enduring competence, credibility, and ethical strength.
He praised the initiative taken by the Young IBA Lawyers’ Committee, calling the summit an important investment in the future of the legal profession and a valuable platform for young lawyers to engage with global legal practices.
Concluding his remarks, Justice Karia encouraged young lawyers to remain resilient, curious, and committed:
“Success in law is not measured only by courtroom victories but by integrity, humility, and one’s contribution to the cause of justice. Integrity is the foundation of our profession and must be preserved till the last breath.”
