The Kerala High Court granted 15 days’ parole to a life convict for the purpose of getting married, acknowledging the unwavering commitment of the woman who chose to marry him despite his conviction.
The convict is serving a sentence at the High Security Prison, Viyyur, for his involvement in a murder case. Despite the conviction, the marriage had already been arranged prior to the judgment, and both families remained committed to conducting the wedding. The application for emergency parole had initially been rejected by prison authorities on the grounds that prison rules do not permit emergency leave for a convict’s own marriage.
Taking note of the situation, the Court verified the marriage date i.e. 13 July 2025 through a report submitted by the local police, and considered the woman’s resolute decision to proceed with the wedding. Justice Kunhikrishnan said that while he was not looking at the convict, he was compelled by the strength and sincerity of the bride’s love, describing her decision as courageous and inspiring.
Exercising its extraordinary jurisdiction, the Court directed the prison authorities to release the convict on parole from 12 July to 26 July 2025, allowing him to solemnise the marriage.
