Kerala High Court introduces e-Filing System for Jail Appeals and Prisoners’ Petitions

On June 24, 2025, the Kerala High Court announced the implementation of e-filing for jail appeals and other judicial petitions submitted by prisoners, effective from July 1, 2025. This move is aimed at streamlining and digitizing the submission process, which until now was paper-based due to the lack of an electronic alternative.

The decision follows a directive from Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar to explore digital alternatives for filing such cases. As part of the transition, the Court has issued two Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs):

  1. SOP for Online Filing – To enable jail authorities to submit appeals and petitions via CMS login credentials.

  2. KeLSA SOP for Jail Appeals, Parole & Remissions – To ensure uniformity across jails regarding legal aid, documentation, and coordination with the High Court Legal Services Committee.
