Malegaon 2008 Blast Case: All Seven Accused Acquitted After 17-Year Trial

A special in Mumbai acquitted all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case, which had rocked the Maharashtra town in September 2008, claiming over six lives and injuring more than 100 people. Special Judge A.K. Lahoti delivered the verdict, nearly three months after reserving judgment on April 19, 2025.

The trial, which formally began in 2018, had drawn national attention due to its political and communal overtones. The accused included BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit, Major (Retd.) Ramesh Upadhyay, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, and Sameer Kulkarni.

All were acquitted of charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and Explosives Act, bringing a close to one of Indiaโ€™s most controversial and high-profile terror cases.
