NGT Raps Meerut Municipal Corporation for Failing to Treat 42 Lakh Tonnes of Waste, Calls for Recovery Update

Meerut Waste Management

The National Green Tribunal (Principal Bench, New Delhi) heard matter concerning unscientific dumping and lack of treatment of municipal solid waste at Lohiya Nagar, Meerut.

The applicant highlighted that Meerut generates about 900 MT of waste daily (3.28 lakh MT annually), with an estimated 42.17 lakh MT of legacy waste accumulated over the past 13 years, but no effective treatment facilities have been created. It was also pointed out that despite the pendency of proceedings, the Municipal Corporation has failed to bridge the gap between waste generation and treatment.

Taking note of these submissions, the Tribunal directed the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Meerut to appear virtually and file an affidavit within six weeks, detailing the status of daily waste management, treatment facilities, legacy waste remediation, leachate treatment, planned infrastructure, funding sources, responsible authority, and timeframes.

The Tribunal also recorded that ₹5 crore environmental compensation had been imposed on the Municipal Corporation but not deposited. Since a Recovery Certificate has been issued, the State of Uttar Pradesh, through the District Magistrate, Meerut, was asked to file a status report on recovery within six weeks.

The matter has been listed for further hearing on 13 November 2025
