Suyash Kumar Mishra v Union of India [Decided on 13-01-2026]

NGT directs clean drinking water supply

In an original application filed before the National Green Tribunal, New Delhi, raising an issue of the contamination of municipal drinking water across India, a Bench of Justice Prakash Shrivastava (Chairperson) and Dr. A. Senthil Vel (Expert Member) issued notice to respondents and directed the municipal corporations to provide clean drinking water till the next date of hearing.

The applicant submitted that the residents of Sector Delta-I, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, had complained of discoloured and foul-smelling drinking water supplied through municipal pipelines, resulting in health issues, including acute gastrointestinal illness. The applicant contended that sewage mixed with potable water was being supplied and that the residents of Indore, Gandhinagar, Pune, and Bengaluru had faced similar issues.

The Tribunal noted that the present application raised a significant issue regarding compliance with environmental norms and issued notice to the respondents to file their response a week before the next date of hearing.

The applicant submitted that all municipal corporations concerned would be impleaded within two days. The Tribunal stated that notice would be issued to them once impleadment is done, and an amended memo of parties is filed.

The Tribunal directed the respondent municipal corporations to ensure that clean drinking water is supplied to residents till the next date of hearing.
