The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Principal Bench, New Delhi, has intervened to prevent the felling of nearly 1,872 mature eucalyptus trees standing on Gau Charan (common grazing) land in Village Kambas, Tehsil Barara, District Ambala, Haryana.
Hearing the matter, a Bench led by Justice Prakash Shrivastava (Chairperson) and Dr. A. Senthil Vel (Expert Member) noted that the trees were auctioned by the local Sarpanch and the Block Development & Panchayat Officer for felling. The applicants argued that the auction violated mandatory procedures and, if executed, would cause serious environmental damage.
The Tribunal took note that a related civil suit pending before the Ambala court had been withdrawn earlier this month, clearing the way for the NGT proceedings.
Issuing notice to the respondents, the Bench directed them to file replies by way of affidavit at least one week before the next hearing. The Tribunal further instructed the Divisional Forest Officer (“DFO”) to ensure that no illegal tree felling takes place in the interim.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on November 27, 2025.
