Punjab and Haryana High Court

The High Court of Punjab and Haryana has issued a circular directing the adoption of uniform and dignified terminology while referring to courts across Punjab, Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

As per the circular dated December 24, 2025, all courts other than the High Court are to be referred to as “District Courts / District Judiciary / Trial Courts” in official correspondence and judicial functioning. The use of expressions such as “Subordinate Judge”, “Subordinate Courts” or “Lower Courts” shall not be used unless the same is inevitable.

The directions have been issued by the Hon’ble Chief Justice and companion Judges.
