Supreme Court Asks ECI to Consider Further Extending SIR Deadline

SIR deadline extension

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to sympathetically consider a further extension of the deadline for submission of enumeration forms under the ongoing Special Intensive Revision 2025 (SIR) of electoral rolls in Kerala. The Court’s recommendation came in view of the state’s upcoming local-body elections, scheduled for 9 and 11 December, which it said could affect officials’ ability to timely complete SIR formalities.

Although the ECI had earlier extended the SIR submission deadline from 4 December to 11 December, the bench led by Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi directed that a formal representation be filed by the Kerala government, and asked the ECI to decide on the extension “objectively and sympathetically” by the day after tomorrow.

The Court noted that many officers and staff deployed for local-body polls are also tasked with SIR duties, and allowing more time would ensure that eligible voters do not miss the chance to submit their forms.
