The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariats on a plea challenging the impeachment proceedings initiated against Justice Yashwant Verma.

The petition contends that the impeachment process is vitiated for non-compliance with the Judges Inquiry Act, 1968, and argues that the mandatory procedure prescribed under law was not followed. It has also been alleged that the impeachment motion was not passed by both Houses of Parliament on the same day, rendering the proceedings constitutionally infirm.

Issuing notice, the Court sought responses from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariats on the maintainability and merits of the challenge. The matter will be taken up for further hearing on a later date.
