SCWLA Condemns Misogynistic Remarks by Retired Justice Katju, Demands Public Apology

The Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association (SCWLA), led by Senior Advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani, has strongly condemned the recent remarks of retired Supreme Court judge Justice Markandey Katju, who suggested that women lawyers could obtain favorable judicial orders by “winking” at judges.

In a press release dated 22 August 2025, SCWLA termed the comments “misogynistic,” describing them as an attack on the dignity, competence, and professional standing of women in the legal fraternity. The Association stressed that such remarks, particularly from a former judge of the Supreme Court, not only trivialize the merit and hard work of women advocates but also erode public faith in judicial impartiality and perpetuate regressive stereotypes.

Calling the statement “shocking and unbecoming of the dignity associated with constitutional office,” SCWLA demanded an unconditional public apology from Justice Katju. It further urged the legal community to unite in rejecting and censuring such attitudes that undermine gender equality and the credibility of judicial institutions.

Reassuring women in law, SCWLA affirmed that their worth is determined by intellect, integrity, and commitment to justice not outdated sexist notions. The Association reaffirmed its commitment to stand by women lawyers and uphold the values of equality, respect, and justice.
