Historic moment in Indian politics as Senior Advocate Menaka Guruswamy has been elected to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal, becoming the first openly queer Member of Parliament in India.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared on X that four of its Rajya Sabha elects, including Dr Menaka Guruswamy, received their winning certificates today.
Designated as a Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India in 2019, Dr Guruswamy is widely known for her role as a lawyer in the landmark Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India case that led to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in India. Her entry into Parliament marks a significant step for LGBTQ+ representation in Indian public life.
