Senior Advocate M. Sricharan Rangarajan has issued a public statement expressing deep concern over the impeachment motion moved against Hon’ble Justice G.R. Swaminathan of the Madras High Court, calling the allegations “baseless”, “sweeping”, and “constitutionally improper”.
He clarified that the motion incorrectly names him as the Senior Advocate allegedly favoured by Justice Swaminathan, asserting that the charges lack factual foundation and rely on inaccurate and misleading data. He emphasised that the allegations particularly the claim of preferential treatment due to belonging to a “particular community” are unfounded and defamatory.
Rejecting the narrative of favouritism, Sr Adv Rangarajan highlighted that out of nearly 3,000 cases disposed of by Justice Swaminathan during the period questioned, he appeared in only 14, while several other eminent advocates had far more matters listed before the same judge. He further stressed that Justice Swaminathan has disposed of over 1 lakh cases since his elevation in 2017, noting the absurdity of the allegations.
Calling attention to the timing of the motion which mirrors an earlier anonymous complaint, he described it as an attempt by “a select few” to target a judge for delivering decisions unpalatable to certain interests. He warned that such attacks undermine judicial independence and threaten the dignity of the institution.
Expressing disappointment over the silence of sections of the Bar, he urged the legal fraternity to stand against unfounded accusations and resist attempts to divide advocates by community. “If we do not stand tall today, in support of the truth, what is happening to me could happen to you tomorrow,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the values of integrity and public duty passed down by his late father, recalling that even his name was incorrectly mentioned in the impeachment motion, an error he described as “telling” of the motion’s credibility.
