Chief Justice of India BR Gavai has assured that he will examine the recent Supreme Court order directing the removal of all stray dogs from Delhi NCR streets. The issue was mentioned by advocate Nanita Sharma in connection with a pending appeal against a Delhi High Court judgment on the implementation of the sterilization programme.
The petitioner has alleged that despite receiving funds, the MCD and other authorities failed to effectively control the stray dog population. It was argued that if earlier directions for proper utilization of funds and sterilization measures had been implemented, there would have been no need for the new order.
Concerns were also raised that mass relocation of stray dogs to shelters could worsen the spread of diseases within such facilities and increase the risk of transmission to humans. Reference was made to an earlier Supreme Court judgment, in which Justice Karol was on the bench, that prohibited indiscriminate killing of canines and emphasized compassion for all living beings.
