Supreme Court Dismisses Plea Challenging Bombay High Court’s Kolhapur Circuit Bench

Kolhapur circuit bench

The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a petition challenging the notification establishing a circuit bench of the Bombay High Court at Kolhapur. A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria dismissed the plea filed by advocate Ranjeet Baburao Nimbalkar, which questioned the validity of setting up the circuit bench inaugurated in August by then Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai.

The petitioner had argued that creation of circuit benches was intended to be an exception under the Jaswant Singh Commission criteria and contended that there was no material to show adequate consultation among Bombay High Court judges. He also claimed that the Kolhapur bench, which exercises jurisdiction over six districts, would impose an administrative burden on the High Court.
