Supreme Court Issues Comprehensive Directions to Protect Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve

Jim Corbett Protection

The Supreme Court issued series of conservation directives aimed at safeguarding the Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve. The Court while pronouncing the directions, noted that Uttarakhand must undertake restoration measures to compensate for the illegal tree felling that took place in the reserve.

Emphasising the principle that tourism must be eco-tourism, the Court stated that economic activity cannot come at the cost of ecological degradation. The Court has issued a detailed list of activities that will stand prohibited in the buffer zones and catchment areas adjoining the reserve, ensuring that human interference is minimized in these ecologically fragile regions.

Recognising the challenges faced by forest staff deployed deep inside the core areas, the Court further directed that special consideration must be given to personnel working far from their families. The Court mandated that forest camps must receive adequate infrastructure, including essential facilities like clean drinking water and basic amenities, to support those safeguarding the reserve on the ground.

Order is awaited for detailed brief.
