The Supreme Court on Monday directed all States and Union Territories to furnish details of FIRs registered in connection with digital arrest scams, as it continued hearing the suo motu case initiated to tackle the growing menace of such cybercrimes.
A Bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi observed that the scams appeared to have a pan-India presence and considered the possibility of entrusting the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Bench sought clarification on whether the CBI possesses adequate human and technical resources to manage such a large-scale probe across the country.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Court that the CBI is already investigating some of the offences and is receiving technical assistance from the Cyber Crime Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Bench noted that while a uniform investigation was necessary to ensure consistency and coordination, it would not issue any formal direction without first hearing the States. Accordingly, the Court issued notice to all States to respond on the matter.
