Supreme Court Orders Immediate Release of Youth Convicted in Maharashtra Case; Notes He Was Barely 18 at Time of Offence

Anil Kumar v. State of Maharashtra, [Decided on 7.10.2025]

youth offender release

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the immediate release of accused, observing that further incarceration would serve no purpose since he was barely 18 years old at the time of committing the offence.

A Bench comprising the Chief Justice of India and Justice K. Vinod Chandran granted leave to appeal and allowed the plea, noting that extending the accused’s imprisonment by three additional months would neither bring added solace to the victim’s family nor elicit further remorse from the accused.

Emphasising the young age of the accused during the incident, the Court held that continued detention would be unjustified and ordered his release forthwith.
