The Supreme Court expanded the scope of proceedings to examine broader issues concerning the issuance of motor vehicle insurance policies by different insurance companies.
A Bench of Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra directed that 22 insurance companies, including both public and private sector insurers such as ICICI Lombard, HDFC ERGO, Bajaj Allianz, Tata AIG, New India Assurance, and United India Insurance, be impleaded as party respondents.
The Court observed that the case raised questions of systemic importance relating to the uniformity and regulatory framework governing motor insurance policies. Accordingly, the matter was adjourned to September 18, 2025, for further hearing, with directions to ensure representation from all newly added insurers through nominated counsel.
