The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Delhi Police on the bail petitions of Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, and Shifa Ur Rehman in the 2020 Delhi riots “larger conspiracy” case, registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and various provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
The bench comprising Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice N.V. Anjaria has scheduled the next hearing on 27 October 2025.
The petition challenges the 2 September 2025 Delhi High Court order that denied them bail, which observed that the allegations were grave and noted that delay alone does not suffice to grant bail under UAPA’s stringent provisions.
The Supreme Court hearing, initially set for 12 September, was first postponed as the judges received case files too late to review them adequately. The matter was then adjourned again on 19 September at the request of counsel, before being scheduled for 22 September.
