Supreme Court Refuses to Lift Stay on Udaipur Files, Awaits Centre’s Decision

The Supreme Court refused to lift the Delhi High Court’s stay on the release of the film Udaipur Files, based on the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur.

A Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymala Bagchi noted that the Central government is already examining the film under Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act, as directed by the High Court. The Court emphasized that it would await the Centre’s findings before deciding further.

The Court clarified that the High Court had not commented on the film’s content but merely directed the producers to approach the Central government. It also allowed one of the accused in the Kanhaiya Lal case to be represented before the review panel.
