The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea filed by Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma challenging the initiation of impeachment proceedings against him under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, thereby clearing the way for the continuation of the parliamentary process to inquire into allegations of misconduct.
A Bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma pronounced the verdict after having reserved its decision on January 8. The challenge was directed against the Lok Sabha Speaker’s decision to constitute a three-member inquiry committee following the admission of an impeachment motion moved by Members of Parliament.
Appearances:
Senior Advocates Sidharth Luthra, Mukul Rohatgi and Jayant Mehta appeared on behalf of Justice Varma, while Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta represented the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha functionaries.
