Presidential Reference Judgment

The Supreme Court on Thursday, September 11, reserved its judgment in the Presidential Reference under Article 143 of the Constitution concerning the timelines for the President and Governors to grant assent to Bills under Articles 200 and 201.

A Constitution Bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice AS Chandurkar heard the matter extensively over ten days. The reference raised critical questions regarding the time frame within which the President or Governor must act on Bills passed by the legislature, a matter of significant constitutional importance.
