The Supreme Court stayed the criminal proceedings against Anupam Mittal, founder of Shaadi.com, in a case arising from a complaint filed by a woman who was allegedly cheated by a man she met on the matrimonial platform. The Court has sought a response from the Telangana Police before proceeding further.
According to the complaint filed earlier this year, the woman alleged that a man she connected with through Shaadi.com deceived her of over ₹10 lakh. She claimed the man made false promises, took money from her under various pretexts, and later threatened to edit and circulate her private photographs when she demanded repayment.
The authorities alleged that Shaadi.com had failed to verify the identity of the man before allowing him to access and interact with users on the platform. The Supreme Court’s interim relief provides a pause in the proceedings against Mittal, pending further review of the police’s response.
