The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of a disturbing news report highlighting a surge in stray dog attacks across cities and their outskirts, leading to multiple fatalities, particularly among young children and the elderly. The bench led by Justice J.B. Pardiwala noted the “alarming and disturbing facts” reported in a press report highlighting a series of fatal dog bite incidents.
Citing the growing number of dog bite cases and instances of rabies-related deaths, the Court observed the urgency and seriousness of the public health threat. Justice Pardiwala remarked that the situation warranted judicial attention, especially given the vulnerability of infants and senior citizens.
The Registry has been directed to register the matter as a suo motu writ petition and place the order along with the news report before the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India for further directions and appropriate orders.
