‘Have Some Respect for War Heroes’: SC Slams Petition Challenging War Memorial

Vikesh Singh Negi v. State of Uttarakhand [Order dated March 12, 2026]

Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Thursday strongly criticised a petition challenging the construction of a war memorial, observing that individuals who question memorials dedicated to soldiers must show respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation.

During the hearing, the Bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi expressed displeasure at the filing of the petition and questioned the motive behind it.

“Those who have sacrificed their life for the nation have some respect for them.”

The Court remarked that the High Court had already dismissed the petition and suggested that such matters should not ordinarily be entertained.

“A person who has no respect for the war heroes who made the supreme sacrifice for the protection of the borders of this country should not have been allowed even to enter the High Court process.”

The Bench also warned that it may impose ₹1 lakh in costs on the petitioner for filing the plea. When the Court indicated that costs may be imposed, counsel for the petitioner sought permission to withdraw the Special Leave Petition. The Court allowed the request and permitted the withdrawal of the petition.
