TN Govt Seeks Recall of CBI Probe Order in Karur TVK Stampede

Karur Stampede Probe

The Tamil Nadu Government has urged the Supreme Court to lift its interim order transferring the probe into the Karur TVK rally stampede to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In its counter filed in the SLP arising from the 27 September 2025 tragedy which claimed around 41 lives the State contends that the local police and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) earlier constituted by the Madras High Court are fully competent to conduct a fair, thorough, and impartial investigation. It argues that no exceptional circumstances exist to warrant central agency intervention.

The Supreme Court had previously directed a CBI-led, judge-monitored probe citing the scale of the incident and concerns over neutrality; the agency has since begun taking charge of case materials from Karur district. The stampede has also escalated political tensions in Tamil Nadu, with TVK Chief Vijay facing scrutiny over crowd-management lapses, even as his party accuses the DMK Government of leveraging the probe to target a growing political challenger.
