Bar Council of Delhi Summarily Suspends 67 Candidates for Model Code Violations Ahead of Elections

Delhi Bar Council candidate suspension 2026

The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) has placed 67 candidates under summary suspension with immediate effect in connection with the ongoing Bar Council of Delhi Elections, 2026, citing grave violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and the Election Rules, 2023.

In an order dated February 22, 2026, issued by Justice Talwant Singh, Returning Officer, BCD, the Election Committee recorded that despite categorical advisories and strict warnings, incontrovertible material including field reports established widespread breaches by certain candidates. The violations were stated to include rampant sloganeering near polling areas, distribution of campaign leaflets, setting up of tents, display of flex hoardings, and deployment of unauthorised persons, resulting in physical obstruction to voters and wilful defiance of election norms.

Invoking its plenary powers to preserve the sanctity of the electoral process, the Election Committee ordered summary suspension pending elimination of candidature of the candidates. The order further provides that the affected candidates may prefer an appeal within 12 hours of the issuance of the suspension order.
