The Punjab & Haryana High Court has directed the judicial officers to not use Artificial Intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Meta for writing judgments or conducting legal research.
The instruction, issued through a communication dated April 6, 2026 by the Registrar General, has been circulated to all District and Sessions Judges in Punjab, Haryana, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh for strict compliance. The directive has been issued pursuant to directions of the Chief Justice.
The High Court in the letter has stated:
“Judicial Officers… not to use Artificial Intelligence tools including but not limited to Chat GPT, Gemini, Copilot, Meta etc. for writing of judgements and legal research. Any violation of these instructions will be viewed seriously.”
